Every member of the team, from the front desk staff to the surgeons, knows that the patient should be treated like a member of the family. In Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Sibiu or Arad, Doctor Dejeu’s team is constantly present and offers its services to more than 2,000 patients with obesity problems annually and more than 1,000 cancer patients. An interview with Dr. Viorel Dejeu, internationally accredited surgeon of excellence in bariatric surgery.
What is the importance of bariatric surgery for patients at risk of overweight?
Obesity is a serious health problem, not an aesthetic shortcoming, and brings with it multiple associated diseases such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, increased incidence of cancers, etc. All this greatly reduces the patient’s quality of life.
Obese patients, for example, live less than normal-weight patients. Bariatric surgery reverses all these harmful effects of obesity, restoring health and significantly improving quality of life. Patients gain years of life, returning to normal weight with these surgeries.
What’s it like working on the same team as your brother? Where do you work, in which cities?
We complement each other in what we do, we work well together, as a proof that we have built a dedicated, professional medical team. We are glad that we can do our job as doctors and work as we know best, at our own pace.
Our team has grown healthily, with other specialists such as surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists and doctors from other specialties close to us. Basically, we work in Oradea, Arad, Sibiu, Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, so we are almost everywhere, trying to help as many patients as possible.
You often say that in Romania you have created your own universe, your own medical team. What is this universe of Dr. Viorel Dejeu like?
It’s a world where the patient comes first and excellence is the standard of work. We have always conveyed that we treat our patients as our family members and we want you to believe that we never forget that thought.
Our team offers comprehensive services, from consultation, to operations or non-invasive procedures such as the installation of an oral gastric balloon, to psychological support and nutrition advice. We’re there for patients, just a phone call away, from the moment they ask us a question until they reach their desired health and/or weight.
According to the latest studies, the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing every day. Do you have cases of bariatric surgery among young people?
In recent years, bariatric surgery has gained a lot of ground and is internationally recognised for its beneficial effects. Many parents turn to us when diets stop working and their children’s weight is out of control. Unfortunately, there is an obesity epidemic among children and adolescents. We also operate on teenagers, after training and assessment appropriate to their level of understanding. The earlier they return to normal weight, the more harmonious they develop physically and psychologically.
What is your greatest satisfaction as a doctor?
To be able to do someone good. When the patient comes with confidence, they offer you their health and their life. There is a synergy, a connection or a special experience happening there, from which both come out differently than they went in. The patient, healthier and happier, and the doctor, satisfied that he has done his job.
